The Southwestern Region of Virginia has historically provided a renewable supply of sawtimber for lumber manufacturing companies. Today, the continued utilization of resources by forest products industries in the region contributes to economic stability and toward satisfying the ever-increasing public demand for wood products.

Independence Lumber, Inc. procures almost 100% of its standing timber needs from private landowners. Occasionally National Forest timber sales are purchased. Landowners will receive over 4 million dollars for their stumpage directly. This translates into another 30 million dollars of economic activity associated with the harvesting, transportation and processing of logs.

About one half of the company's raw material needs are procured through fee stumpage purchase. Two company owned logging crews and five to six independent logging contractors cut and deliver these logs to the mill. Harvesting schedules are planned according to tract access conditions, difficulty of logging, landowner requirements and of course, lumber market conditions.
